Recognized on March 18th, Health Workforce Well-Being Day acknowledges the prevalence of burnout, mental health struggles, and stress amongst health workers, as well as the need for solutions to address these critical issues.
This important day coincides with the anniversary of the passage of the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act in 2022. The law supports health workers’ mental health and well-being by improving the systems in which health workers are educated, trained, and practice. No matter your role in the healthcare landscape, the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation (DLBHF) has outlined ways you can take action:
- Implement the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Impact Wellbeing Guide: This guide provides hospital leaders and executives with step-by-step actions to accelerate professional well-being work in their hospitals at the operational level.
- Advocate for Licensing and Credentialing Application Reform: DLBHF’s Wellbeing First Champion Challenge program provides support in auditing and revising licensing and credentialing applications to be free of intrusive mental health questions and stigmatizing language.
- Support the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act: This first-of-its-kind law has been reauthorized through September 2030. Message your Representative and Senators here to urge them to fund lifesaving programs under this act.
- Join the ALL IN for Mental Health Initiative: This initiative aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding health workers seeking mental health care by highlighting six key actions anyone can take, one of which is strengthening health workers’ access to confidential Professional or Physician Health Programs (PHPs).
In addition to implementing these action items, we invite members of the Washington healthcare community dedicated to health worker well-being to attend the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) 2026 Conference and Annual Membership Meeting – Navigating Change: Challenges, Solutions, and Success from April 29-May 2, 2026, in Baltimore, Md.
This event is a special opportunity for PHPs, healthcare leaders, physicians, and stakeholders nationwide to collaboratively build a strong foundation of safety, support, and well-being for health workers and the patients they care for.
Today and every day, let us continue to make physician health and well-being a priority.
