Upcoming FSPHP CME Webinar: When Physicians Become Patients

The Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) is hosting a live, CME-accredited webinar titled “When Physicians Become Patients: Providing Care for General Medical, Mental Health, and Substance Use Disorders” on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, from 10:00am–12:00pm PDT. This event is free for FSPHP members and $50 for non-members.

Led by five physician health experts, including Dr. Chris Bundy, Executive Medical Director of the Washington Physicians Health Program and Chief Medical Officer of FSPHP, this two-hour program offers practical, real-world guidance for one of the most complex dynamics in medicine: treating physicians as patients.

The physician-patient brings extensive medical knowledge, professional identity, and unique vulnerabilities that shape the care experience. The treating physician encounters an uncommon clinical dynamic in which the ethical, emotional, and interpersonal dimensions differ significantly from their typical patient relationship.

This educational program equips physicians and other healthcare professionals to navigate these distinct dynamics with confidence and sensitivity. Attendees will acquire strategies that build trust, honor confidentiality, and engage the physician-patient in care that meets clinical needs and professional realities.

Dr. Bundy will present alongside the following esteemed speakers:

  • Michael J. Baron, MD, MPH, DFASAM, FAPA: Immediate Past President, Federation of State Physician Health Programs Medical Director, Tennessee Medical Foundation Physician’s Health Program
  • Paul H. Earley, MD, DFASAM: Medical Director Emeritus, Georgia Professional Health Program, Inc.
  • Lisa Merlo, PhD, MPE: Co-Chair, FSPHP Research Committee, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Florida Director of Research, Professionals Resource Network, Inc.
  • Alexis Polles, MD, FASAM: Medical Director Emerita, Professionals Resource Network
