How does the referral process work?
The typical referral begins with a call to WPHP’s toll free number (800-552-7236) where the caller is allowed to share their concerns with a member of our clinical staff. Our clinical staff member provides psychosocial support to the caller, reviews the indicators of possible impairment with the caller, and determines a possible course of action based on reasonable suspicion and probable cause. The clinical staff member then presents the case to the entire clinical team for appropriate triage and disposition.
When should I make a referral?
Since WPHP deals with any condition, physical or mental, that may affect ones ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety, WPHP can be contacted about any concern.
Am I required to call WPHP?
Existing statutes require physicians to report other physicians that have a condition, either physical or mental, that may affect their ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety. Under WAC 246-16-200, all individuals licensed by the Department of Health in the state of Washington will soon be required to report any other individual licensed by the Department of Health who commits an act of unprofessional conduct or who has a condition, physical or mental, that may affect their ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety. The report involving a condition that may effect a practitioner’s ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety can be made to WPHP and fulfill the reporting requirement of WAC 246-16-200.
